Counting Crows is an American rock band formed in 1991 in Berkeley, California. The current lineup features lead vocalist Adam Duritz, rhythm guitarist David Bryson, lead guitarist Dan Vickrey, keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, multi-instrumentalist David Immerglück, bassist Millard Powers, and drummer Jim Bogios. Former members include drummers Steve Bowman (1991–1994) and Ben Mize (1994–2002), as well as bassist Matt Malley (1991–2005).

The band rose to prominence with its debut album, August and Everything After (1993), propelled by the breakout single “Mr. Jones.” The album became a commercial success, selling more than seven million copies in the United States. In 1994, Counting Crows earned two Grammy Award nominations: Best New Artist and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “Round Here.”

Their follow-up album, Recovering the Satellites (1996), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and reached the top of the charts in several other countries. All but one of their subsequent albums have placed in the Billboard 200 Top 10. Several hit singles expanded the band’s mainstream success, including “Rain King,” “A Long December,” “Hanginaround,” and their cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi.”

In 2004, the band received an Academy Award nomination for “Accidentally in Love,” featured in the animated film Shrek 2. Known for their vivid songwriting and dynamic live performances, Counting Crows have sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. Billboard has ranked them as the 8th greatest Adult Alternative Artist of all time.

In recent years, the band released Somewhere Under Wonderland in 2014, followed by the four-song EP Butter Miracle, Suite One in 2021. This project was expanded into the full-length album Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!, released in May 2025.
