Gotye (born Wouter André “Wally” De Backer on May 21, 1980) is a Belgian-born Australian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known for his eclectic musical style, which blends indie pop, rock, electronica, and experimental sounds. Born in Bruges, Belgium, Gotye moved to Australia as a child and grew up in Melbourne, where he developed an early interest in music and began learning multiple instruments.
Gotye first gained attention in the early 2000s with his solo work and as a member of the band The Basics, where he honed his songwriting and production skills. His breakthrough came with his 2011 album Making Mirrors, which included the international smash hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra. The single topped charts worldwide, including the Billboard Hot 100, and earned him three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year.
Beyond his commercial success, Gotye is recognized for his meticulous production, innovative use of sampling, and ability to blend diverse musical genres into cohesive and emotionally resonant works. His other albums, including Boardface (2003) and Like Drawing Blood (2006), showcase his experimental tendencies, combining textured instrumentation with introspective lyrics.
Gotye is also known for his thoughtful approach to music industry practices and his relatively low-profile public persona. While he has not released another mainstream hit on the scale of “Somebody That I Used to Know,” his influence on modern pop and indie music remains significant. In addition to his solo work, he continues to perform with The Basics and explore new musical projects, demonstrating a commitment to artistic integrity over commercial trends.
