Jewel (born Jewel Kilcher on May 23, 1974) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actress, and poet known for her emotive voice, introspective songwriting, and blend of folk, pop, and country influences. Rising to fame in the 1990s, she became a defining voice in contemporary folk-pop music.

Early Life

Jewel was born in Payson, Utah, and raised in Homer, Alaska. Coming from a musical family—her father, Atz Kilcher, was a singer and homesteader—she began performing at an early age, playing guitar and singing in local venues. Jewel briefly attended Sarah Lawrence College before leaving to pursue her music career.

Her debut album, Pieces of You (1995), became a massive success after the singles “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “You Were Meant for Me,” and “Foolish Games” gained heavy radio play.
